The Seminoles received an unexpected blow Monday morning when true freshman defensive back Sam McCall announced his intentions to enter the NCAA transfer portal. McCall is the first player on the roster to share his plans to leave the program since the 2022 season began. Interestingly, the message was deleted shortly after it was shared.

If the Florida native truly plans to leave Florida State, he will have to wait to officially do so after the season due to transfer windows announced by the NCAA in August. A 45-day window will begin the day after championship selections are made.

McCall has appeared in six games for FSU this season with his main contributions coming from special teams as a kickoff returner. He was credited with a tackle and a pass breakup against Boston College. McCall has played just 36 defensive snaps on the year, all of them at cornerback, and has recently started practicing at safety.
The former five-star prospect has returned eight kickoffs for an average of 17.8 yards per return. He remains listed as a two-down back at cornerback and kick returner, while he is listed as a co-starter at kick returner.
The 6-foot-1, 187-pound defensive back did not record a stat line against Miami. He played 13 times in Florida State’s 41-16 win over Georgia Tech in Week 9.
